1. LANCE ARMSTRONG

Love or loathe, believer or disbeliever, the Lance Armstrong story was very special. After overcoming testicular cancer - doctors gave him a 40 per cent chance of survival - that spread to his lungs and brain, the American returned to the Tour de France in 1999. Not only did he win sport's greatest endurance test but he won the next six as well. Defies all logic.
